Who Is Hiring RBTs in Massachusetts

Most active employers (RBT roles): Positive Behavior Supports Corp., Sevita, Advocates, Sunflower Development Center, Northeast Arc.

Busiest hiring cities: Franklin, Raynham, Lowell, Danvers, Holyoke.

Where RBT wages come from: Massachusetts Medicaid pays $16.37 per 15 minutes for the technician-delivered treatment code (CPT 97153) — $65.48 of billable revenue per clinical hour. Your wage, the BCBA’s supervision, benefits, no-shows, and overhead all come out of that number. Higher-rate states can simply pay technicians more — see the Massachusetts Medicaid ABA rate table.

Becoming a Billable Technician in Massachusetts

Massachusetts does not require an RBT credential before you can bill MassHealth for technician-level ABA hours. The state’s MassHealth ABA performance specifications lay out three separate paths to qualify as a Behavior Technician (BT).

You can get there with a high school diploma or GED plus 12 months of experience working with people with developmental disabilities, children, adolescents, or transition-age youth. You can also get there with an associate’s degree in a human, social, or educational-services field (or a related certificate) plus 6 months of that experience. Or you can get there with RBT certification from the BACB plus just 3 months of experience.

That third path is the fastest. RBT cuts the required experience to a quarter of the diploma-only route. If you want to start billing sooner, RBT is the quickest door in, even though it is not the only one.

Whichever path you take, you do not work alone. Every BT-level staff member here, RBT or not, must work under direct supervision from a Licensed Applied Behavior Analyst (LABA) — the state’s own behavior-analyst license, not just a BCBA.

What That Means for Your Paycheck

Because RBT is optional here, it works more as a hiring differentiator than a legal gate. Employers move faster on candidates who already hold it.

Pay growth has a ceiling that has nothing to do with your credential. MassHealth re-adopted its ABA fee schedule effective Dec 1, 2026 with every rate held flat at October 2024 levels — roughly $65 an hour for technician-delivered services billed under code 97153. A Massachusetts ABA association representative testified in June 2026 that this rate lags neighboring states, citing about $88 an hour in Arizona and $83 in Maryland. Because MassHealth billing funds most technician pay here, a frozen rate caps what agencies can offer no matter how many credentials you stack. Source: coverage of the MassHealth rate freeze.

Supervision also shapes how many technician hours a practice can staff. MassHealth requires LABA supervision at no less than 10% of your direct service hours, capped at 25% without documented rationale. That codified floor is specific to Massachusetts — many states leave the ratio undefined — and it limits how many technicians one LABA can realistically support.

Who is hiring RBTs in Massachusetts?

The most active employers in recent postings are Positive Behavior Supports Corp., Sevita, Advocates, Sunflower Development Center, Northeast Arc. The busiest hiring markets are Franklin, Raynham, Lowell, Danvers, Holyoke.

What is the career path from RBT?

RBT → BCaBA (bachelor’s-level, optional) → BCBA (master’s-level). Supervised fieldwork hours accumulated as an RBT count toward BCBA certification, which is why supervision quality matters as much as the wage when you compare offers.
