Becoming a Billable Technician in Maine
Maine does not use the national RBT credential to decide who can bill Medicaid for ABA-type services. To work as a technician on Section 28 Specialized Services under MaineCare, you need Maine’s own credential instead: Behavioral Health Professional (BHP) certification, not RBT.
There are two paths to BHP. One is an in-person, instructor-led 35-hour training. The other is a blended track: 12 self-paced online modules plus a 7-hour live session. Either way you also need current Child and Adult CPR/First Aid, earned only through the instructor-led or blended format, plus OSHA bloodborne pathogens training that has to be renewed every year. Once certified, you work under a supervising BCBA or licensed psychologist.
If you’re hired for standard Treatment Services instead of Specialized Services, the bar to start is lower. You just need to be 18 or older with a high school diploma or equivalent, and your employer has up to a year to get you BHP-certified. That’s a real opening if you want to start working in ABA in Maine before you hold any credential at all.
One thing to know if you already hold a national RBT from another state: it does not carry over here. The MaineCare guidance we reviewed names BHP as the credential that qualifies you to bill, and none of it lists RBT as an accepted substitute. Plan on completing BHP training even if you’re certified elsewhere.
What That Means for Your Paycheck
Because MaineCare requires this state-specific credential instead of a national one, holding BHP certification is what actually unlocks billable hours here, not just holding an RBT. That’s leverage worth using in an interview: ask whether the employer covers the cost of BHP training, since it is the credential that lets you bill at all, not an optional add-on.
Supervision is built into your workweek too. Your supervising BCBA or psychologist owes you at least 4 hours of oversight a month if you work full-time, or 1 hour a month part-time, with at least 1 hour of that on-site. That is time your supervisor is required to give you, and agencies plan staffing around it.
Expect one recurring task every year: bloodborne pathogens training has to be renewed annually to stay compliant. It’s a small thing, but it’s worth asking upfront whether renewal happens on paid time or your own.

What is the career path from RBT?
RBT → BCaBA (bachelor’s-level, optional) → BCBA (master’s-level). Supervised fieldwork hours accumulated as an RBT count toward BCBA certification, which is why supervision quality matters as much as the wage when you compare offers.
