Who Is Hiring RBTs in Nebraska

Most active employers (RBT roles): Lighthouse Autism Center, Above and Beyond Therapy, Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Behaven Kids, Omaha Public Schools.

Busiest hiring cities: Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney, South Sioux City, Beatrice.

Where RBT wages come from: Nebraska Medicaid pays $18.70 per 15 minutes for the technician-delivered treatment code (CPT 97153) — $74.80 of billable revenue per clinical hour. Your wage, the BCBA’s supervision, benefits, no-shows, and overhead all come out of that number. Higher-rate states can simply pay technicians more — see the Nebraska Medicaid ABA rate table.

Becoming a Billable Technician in Nebraska

In Nebraska, there is no such thing as an uncertified technician who bills insurance. Nebraska Medicaid’s ABA service definition names only two roles allowed to bill technician-level codes 97153 and 97154: a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), or a Licensed Assistant Behavior Analyst (LaBA), the state license tied to a BCaBA. If you show up to work without one of those credentials, you can still be trained and shadow sessions, but you cannot be the one billing a client’s hours. That makes the RBT exam a real fork in the road, not a formality. Pass it, and you’re eligible for billable work anywhere in the state. Skip it, and you’re stuck in unpaid-training limbo.

Both pathways lead to the same starting line, but they aren’t identical. RBT is the faster, lower-barrier route: a 40-hour training and a competency assessment gets you certified. LaBA takes longer, since it sits on top of a BCaBA (an associate’s or bachelor’s-level credential plus supervised fieldwork), but it lets you work with a bit more independence under your supervising Licensed Behavior Analyst. Either way, once you’re credentialed, you’re working under the direction of an LBA, who has to personally observe at least 10% of your direct service hours and deliver hands-on service to your client at least once a month.

What That Means for Your Paycheck

Because Nebraska Medicaid will not pay for uncertified hours, your RBT card is the price of admission to a billable role, and agencies have no legal workaround for hiring around it. That gives certified technicians leverage a lot of other entry-level jobs don’t have. There’s also a structural detail worth knowing: one LBA can supervise no more than 24 technicians. That ratio caps how many billable techs a single supervisor can carry, so agencies short on LBAs may compete harder for the credentialed technicians they can actually deploy.

The other side of the ledger: Nebraska Medicaid cut its ABA rates on August 1, 2025, dropping the technician code 97153 to $18.70 per 15 minutes, per DHHS Health Plan Advisory 25-08. Lower reimbursement per hour billed puts pressure on what agencies can offer, even to credentialed staff. Worth asking about in an interview if you’re weighing offers.

Who is hiring RBTs in Nebraska?

The most active employers in recent postings are Lighthouse Autism Center, Above and Beyond Therapy, Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Behaven Kids, Omaha Public Schools. The busiest hiring markets are Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney, South Sioux City, Beatrice.

What is the career path from RBT?

RBT → BCaBA (bachelor’s-level, optional) → BCBA (master’s-level). Supervised fieldwork hours accumulated as an RBT count toward BCBA certification, which is why supervision quality matters as much as the wage when you compare offers.
