Who Is Hiring RBTs in South Dakota

Most active employers (RBT roles): Possibilities, Abbott House Youth Services, State of South Dakota, West River Mental Health, Aegis Therapies.

Busiest hiring cities: Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Pierre, Mitchell, Redfield.

Where RBT wages come from: South Dakota Medicaid pays $21.73 per 15 minutes for the technician-delivered treatment code (CPT 97153) — $86.92 of billable revenue per clinical hour. Your wage, the BCBA’s supervision, benefits, no-shows, and overhead all come out of that number. Higher-rate states can simply pay technicians more — see the South Dakota Medicaid ABA rate table.

Becoming a Billable Technician in South Dakota

South Dakota gives you two paths onto a Medicaid caseload as a technician. You can come in as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) through the BACB, or as a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA). Either credential qualifies you to deliver technician-level services, under supervision, according to the South Dakota Medicaid ABA billing manual.

Neither credential lets you enroll with Medicaid on your own. Your hours get billed under the NPI of a licensed, Medicaid-enrolled behavior analyst who supervises you. That’s not a formality — it’s built into the billing rules. The technician-specific codes (CPT 97152-97154) only get paid when they run through your supervisor’s provider number, not yours.

The manual doesn’t favor RBT over BCaBA or the other way around. What it cares about is that you hold one of the two before you start seeing clients on a Medicaid caseload. Working under a title like “ABA technician” without either credential means you can still be on staff, but you can’t be billed as a technician-level service provider.

What That Means for Your Paycheck

Because Medicaid won’t pay for uncertified technician hours, the RBT or BCaBA credential is the floor, not a bonus. An employer building a Medicaid caseload needs certified technicians to bill for your time at all — that’s real leverage when you’re talking about pay, since uncredentialed technician work simply doesn’t generate the same revenue for the practice.

South Dakota is also short on the licensed behavior analysts who have to supervise you. Only 88 BCBAs were active statewide as of the most recent count, clustered mostly around Sioux Falls and Rapid City. Outside those two metros, expect fewer employers with a supervising analyst on staff, but also less competition for the technician jobs that do exist. Telehealth is allowed for ABA services here, but your supervising analyst still has to see the client in person within the first 30 days and at least every 90 days after that, so in-person visits stay part of the rhythm even on a telehealth-heavy caseload.

Who is hiring RBTs in South Dakota?

What is the career path from RBT?

RBT → BCaBA (bachelor’s-level, optional) → BCBA (master’s-level). Supervised fieldwork hours accumulated as an RBT count toward BCBA certification, which is why supervision quality matters as much as the wage when you compare offers.
