Who Is Hiring RBTs in New Jersey

Most active employers (RBT roles): Positive Behavior Supports Corp., Kids Club ABA, Apple ABA, Success On The Spectrum, ABA Centers of New Jersey.

Busiest hiring cities: Hackensack, Woodbridge, Newark, Belleville, Union City.

Where RBT wages come from: New Jersey Medicaid pays $15.00 per 15 minutes for the technician-delivered treatment code (CPT 97153) — $60.00 of billable revenue per clinical hour. Your wage, the BCBA’s supervision, benefits, no-shows, and overhead all come out of that number. Higher-rate states can simply pay technicians more — see the New Jersey Medicaid ABA rate table.

Becoming a Billable Technician in New Jersey

New Jersey does not license RBTs directly. The state’s 2020 law licenses the tiers above you instead: the Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA) and the Licensed Assistant Applied Behavior Analyst (LaBA). Final rules took effect May 6, 2024. As an RBT, you now practice under a supervisor who must hold one of those licenses, not just a BACB certification.

Two exceptions matter if you’re weighing a job offer. Practitioners contracted with the Division of Developmental Disabilities can supervise without a license until May 6, 2027. Staff in the NJ Early Intervention Program get until May 6, 2029. Ask which bucket a prospective employer falls into before you sign. It tells you whether your supervisor is already licensed or still working under a grace period.

If you want to move up without committing to a full BCBA path, New Jersey has a defined next step: the LaBA. It requires a bachelor’s degree, current BCaBA certification, and supervision by an LBA. That’s a formal, board-recognized rung between RBT and BCBA that not every state has written into law.

What That Means for Your Paycheck

New Jersey wrote the LaBA supervision schedule into regulation instead of leaving it to a guideline. In year one, the supervising LBA owes at least 5% of your practice hours weekly, or one hour every two weeks, whichever is more. After year one, that drops to at least 2% of practice hours monthly, or one hour a month, whichever is more. If you’re the one climbing into a LaBA role, that’s supervision time you can hold your employer to, not just what a manual suggests.

The earning ceiling further up the ladder is real money, and it’s specific to this state. New Jersey’s Behavioral Healthcare Provider Loan Redemption Program lists board certified behavior analysts as an eligible profession, worth up to $50,000 per two years of full-time work at an approved site, capped at $150,000 over six years. That’s not on the table at the RBT level. But it’s a concrete reason to keep climbing the credential ladder in New Jersey specifically, rather than in a state with no comparable program. Licensure here is also brand new, so expect employers to still be sorting out exactly how RBT, LaBA, and LBA roles fit together on paper over the next few years.

What is the career path from RBT?

RBT → BCaBA (bachelor’s-level, optional) → BCBA (master’s-level). Supervised fieldwork hours accumulated as an RBT count toward BCBA certification, which is why supervision quality matters as much as the wage when you compare offers.
