Becoming a Billable Technician in Idaho
Idaho does not force every technician through the RBT exam before they can bill Medicaid. Since 12/1/2025, ABA-type services bill under Children’s Habilitation Intervention Services (CHIS), and CHIS runs two separate qualification tracks for technicians. Which one applies to you depends mostly on whether you have a bachelor’s degree.
If you have a bachelor’s degree, you can bill as an Evidence-Informed Intervention Specialist without ever sitting for the RBT credential. The handbook says it plainly: “Intervention specialists are not required to obtain the RBT credential.” What you do need is a Department-approved Provider Competency Checklist, or at least 40 hours of ABA training delivered by a BCBA or BCaBA. The RBT 40-hour curriculum happens to satisfy that training requirement, so some employers run new hires through it anyway even when the certificate itself isn’t required.
If you don’t have a bachelor’s degree, this path is closed to you, and RBT becomes your way in. Under the Evidence-Based Model (EBM) track, holding the RBT credential is what qualifies you as an EBM Intervention Paraprofessional. For a technician without a four-year degree, getting certified isn’t optional, it’s the credential.
What That Means for Your Paycheck
Because Idaho doesn’t mandate RBT across the board, the certificate works as a differentiator rather than a baseline requirement, and its value depends heavily on your degree status and which billing track your employer uses. Behavioral Intervention claims also carry tier-specific modifier codes, HA for Intervention Technician, HN for Intervention Specialist, TF and TG for the EBM tiers, so your credential determines the rate code your employer bills against.
Supervision is lighter here than in a lot of states: the Evidence-Informed bachelor’s-level tier only requires monthly supervision, not the weekly or biweekly check-ins some Medicaid programs demand. That means fewer built-in touchpoints with your supervising BCBA, so ask upfront how your agency handles it in practice.
Idaho’s billing system just went through a disruptive overhaul, with ABA claims moving off Magellan onto direct state fee-for-service in late 2025. Confirm current pay and hours with any employer directly rather than assuming last year’s numbers still hold. Full rules are in the Idaho Medicaid HCBS/LTSS Provider Handbook.

The most active employers in recent postings are Rise Services, Inc., Opal Autism Centers, Caravel Autism Health, Pathways, Wright Physical Therapy – Joint, Spine, Sport. The busiest hiring markets are Boise, Nampa, Meridian, Eagle, Coeur d’Alene.
What is the career path from RBT?
RBT → BCaBA (bachelor’s-level, optional) → BCBA (master’s-level). Supervised fieldwork hours accumulated as an RBT count toward BCBA certification, which is why supervision quality matters as much as the wage when you compare offers.
