Who Is Hiring RBTs in Utah

Most active employers (RBT roles): Acclimate ABA, Aviation ABA Therapy, Possibilities, Golden Touch ABA, Nova Supports.

Busiest hiring cities: West Jordan, Salt Lake City, St George, American Fork, Springville.

Where RBT wages come from: Utah Medicaid pays $19.67 per 15 minutes for the technician-delivered treatment code (CPT 97153) — $78.68 of billable revenue per clinical hour. Your wage, the BCBA’s supervision, benefits, no-shows, and overhead all come out of that number. Higher-rate states can simply pay technicians more — see the Utah Medicaid ABA rate table.

Becoming a Billable Technician in Utah

If you want to work as an ABA technician in Utah and actually bill Medicaid for your hours, you need a credential first. Utah Medicaid’s Autism Spectrum Disorder Services manual is specific about this: you must hold current certification from an NCCA-accredited organization. That includes the BACB’s RBT, but also the Qualified Applied Behavior Analysis Credentialing Board (QABA) and the Behavioral Intervention Certification Council (BICC). Utah does not require RBT by name.

What you can’t do is start working and get certified later. The manual is explicit: there’s no grace period between your hire date and your certification date. Older guidance used to allow a 120-day ramp-up window. That’s gone. If you’re hired without a current certification, you can’t bill for services until you have one. Your employer has to submit your certification to Medicaid during provider enrollment before your hours count.

What That Means for Your Paycheck

Because certification is mandatory with no exceptions, a practice can’t quietly run you at uncertified pay while you finish training on the job. You either have the credential and can bill, or you don’t and you can’t. That’s leverage for you: a certified technician is worth more to a practice on day one than someone still working toward the exam.

It also means the specific credential matters less than some employers might suggest. RBT, QABA, and BICC all count the same to Utah Medicaid. If a practice tells you RBT is the only path in, that’s their preference, not a state or Medicaid requirement, and it’s worth asking about before you spend time and money on one certification over another.

One more thing worth knowing before you take a job: treatment plans get reassessed every six months, and re-authorization requests need updated progress data measured against the prior period. That’s a recurring documentation cycle technicians feed into, not a one-time setup step. Budget for it when you’re sizing up how a job will actually run day to day.

Common Questions

How much does an RBT make in Utah?

Job postings in Utah that disclose pay show a median around $21.00 per hour (about $43,680 a year full-time).

Do I need the RBT certification to work as a behavior technician in Utah?

It depends on the pathway — Utah allows several technician qualification routes, and the RBT credential is required on some but not all. Details below.

Who is hiring RBTs in Utah?

The most active employers in recent postings are Acclimate ABA, Aviation ABA Therapy, Possibilities, Golden Touch ABA, Nova Supports. The busiest hiring markets are West Jordan, Salt Lake City, St George, American Fork, Springville.

What is the career path from RBT?

RBT → BCaBA (bachelor’s-level, optional) → BCBA (master’s-level). Supervised fieldwork hours accumulated as an RBT count toward BCBA certification, which is why supervision quality matters as much as the wage when you compare offers.
