Who Is Hiring RBTs in Montana

Most active employers (RBT roles): AWARE Inc., Shodair Children’s Hospital, Advanced Therapy Clinic LLC, ArborSys Group, Great Falls Public Schools.

Busiest hiring cities: Helena, Missoula, Bozeman, Billings, Great Falls.

Where RBT wages come from: Montana Medicaid pays $11.36 per 15 minutes for the technician-delivered treatment code (CPT 97153) — $45.44 of billable revenue per clinical hour. Your wage, the BCBA’s supervision, benefits, no-shows, and overhead all come out of that number. Higher-rate states can simply pay technicians more — see the Montana Medicaid ABA rate table.

Becoming a Billable Technician in Montana

Montana Medicaid only pays for technician-level ABA work done by someone with a real BACB credential. The state’s ABA Services Manual names two roles that can bill: RBT and BCaBA. There is no separate billing category for an uncertified technician, no matter what your job title says.

That’s easy to miss, because Montana also has a second, separate layer of paperwork. The Board of Psychologists requires every behavior technician and student intern working under a licensed Behavior Analyst to be individually registered with the Board through a written supervision agreement. Your supervising BA files it, pays a $25 fee, and has to report the relationship within 5 business days of you starting (ARM 24.189.910). Being on that Board registration is a state licensing requirement, but it does not by itself make your hours billable to Medicaid. Only the BACB RBT credential does that. If you’re deciding whether the RBT exam is worth it, this is the answer: it’s the difference between shadowing and getting paid Medicaid rates for your work.

What That Means for Your Paycheck

Because Medicaid billing hinges on the RBT credential specifically, any Montana practice with a Medicaid caseload needs certified RBTs, not just Board-registered technicians. That gives you real leverage when you’re job hunting or asking for a raise once you’re certified.

There’s a supply cap working in your favor, too. A Montana Behavior Analyst can supervise at most 3 student interns while also supervising behavior technicians or assistant behavior analysts, or up to 7 interns if not (ARM 24.189.910(3)). That limit means practices can’t run an unlimited trainee pipeline, so certified RBTs stay in demand rather than getting crowded out by a large intern pool.

One more thing worth knowing: your work is billed under your supervising BCBA’s own NPI, and the manual is explicit that the BCBA carries full professional responsibility for everything you do. Supervision here isn’t a formality. Expect your supervisor to be genuinely involved in your cases, and expect them to expect the same discipline from you in return.

What is the career path from RBT?

RBT → BCaBA (bachelor’s-level, optional) → BCBA (master’s-level). Supervised fieldwork hours accumulated as an RBT count toward BCBA certification, which is why supervision quality matters as much as the wage when you compare offers.
