Becoming a Billable Technician in Wyoming
In Wyoming, there’s only one paraprofessional credential that gets you paid on Medicaid ABA cases: the Registered Behavior Technician. The state’s behavioral health rule spells this out directly. An RBT needs at minimum a GED or high school diploma, must be registered with the BACB, and works under the close, ongoing supervision of a licensed BCBA or licensed BCaBA. You can’t design assessment or treatment plans yourself — that stays with your supervisor. Read the rule here: Wyo. Code R. Agency 048, Sub-Agency 0037, Ch. 13, § 13-3(f)(xi).
Here’s the part that matters most if you’re deciding whether the RBT cert is worth it: Wyoming Medicaid does not enroll a separate, uncertified “behavior technician” tier. The only line-level provider type it recognizes is the RBT. So if the goal is billable hours on a Medicaid caseload in this state, the RBT credential isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s the entry ticket.
Your supervisor’s credential is also under more scrutiny than it used to be. Since March 9, 2022, Wyoming has licensed BCBAs as “behavior analyst” and BCaBAs as “assistant behavior analyst” through the Wyoming Board of Psychology, on top of their BACB certification. That’s Wyo. Stat. Ann. § 33-27-124. Whoever signs off on your supervision hours is answering to a state board, not just the BACB.
What That Means for Your Paycheck
Because Medicaid won’t reimburse for an uncertified technician, a practice can’t quietly staff cases with cheaper, uncredentialed labor to cut costs. If a clinic here bills Medicaid, every technician on that caseload has to be RBT-registered. That sets a real floor under what your credential is worth to an employer — there’s no lower-cost substitute for them to reach for instead.
There’s also a supervision detail worth knowing before you take a job. If your day-to-day supervisor is a BCaBA rather than a BCBA, Wyoming law requires that BCaBA to be supervised by a licensed behavior analyst or licensed psychologist. That’s a second layer of oversight stacked above the BACB’s own rules. It’s worth asking any Wyoming employer how their supervision chain is set up — it tells you how established the practice is and how much support you’ll actually get day to day.

What is the career path from RBT?
RBT → BCaBA (bachelor’s-level, optional) → BCBA (master’s-level). Supervised fieldwork hours accumulated as an RBT count toward BCBA certification, which is why supervision quality matters as much as the wage when you compare offers.
