Who Is Hiring RBTs in North Dakota

Most active employers (RBT roles): Bismarck Public Schools, West Fargo Public Schools, Easterseals Goodwill ND, Inc., Sevita, Sanford Health.

Busiest hiring cities: Fargo, Bismarck, West Fargo, Minot, Grand Forks.

Where RBT wages come from: North Dakota Medicaid pays $10.60 per 15 minutes for the technician-delivered treatment code (CPT 97153) — $42.40 of billable revenue per clinical hour. Your wage, the BCBA’s supervision, benefits, no-shows, and overhead all come out of that number. Higher-rate states can simply pay technicians more — see the North Dakota Medicaid ABA rate table.

Becoming a Billable Technician in North Dakota

North Dakota Medicaid does not lock technician-level ABA work to the RBT credential alone. Its Autism ABA policy lets “Skills Trainers” hold any of several credentials, including RBT, BCAT, a “registered behavior analyst” (RBA), BCaBA, BCBA, or various licensed clinicians. You can even start working before you’re certified: if you have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in an approved field like psychology, social work, counseling, nursing, or early childhood education, you can enroll as a skills trainer right away, as long as you become an RBT or BCAT within 6 months.

Whichever path you take in, you’ll need to work under a qualified Service Oversight practitioner, which the state defines as a licensed BCBA, BCBA-D, RBA, or licensed clinical psychologist. There’s no numeric supervision ratio written into ND’s rules, just a requirement that the arrangement be spelled out in a written supervision contract, so how closely you’re supervised will depend on your employer.

One quirk worth knowing before you take a job: North Dakota’s licensing law exempts unlicensed behavior technicians working under a Licensed Behavior Analyst or Licensed Assistant Behavior Analyst from needing any state license. But it also says you can’t use “RBT” as a standalone job title. Your title has to read “ABA technician,” “behavior technician,” or similar, even if you hold the actual RBT credential. It’s a paperwork distinction, not a ban on the credential itself.

What That Means for Your Paycheck

Even though ND Medicaid technically accepts other credentials, its own care-plan documentation rules state that the majority of authorized ABA hours should be delivered by an RBT specifically. That makes the credential the practical default for full billable hours, even in a state that officially allows alternatives. If you’re weighing whether to get certified before you start, that 6-month grace window gives you room to work first and certify while you go, but your hours and job security improve once you’re RBT-credentialed.

Public schools are also an explicitly eligible ND Medicaid provider type for ABA delivered through the IEP process, which means school-based work is a legitimate billable channel here in addition to clinic and home-based hours.

What is the career path from RBT?
